2.

i propose to answer these statements

seriatim and in the order in which they are brought forward in Bis Honour the Chief Justice's letter, although I would most respectfully submit that it is somewhat unusual to request an officer for an explanation of his conduct, except in answer to specific charges of misconduct. While concluding the taxation

of a bill of costs on the 7th. instant in an important matter wherein two of the Solicitors were engaged before re, i received

from the Chief Justice, a note requesting me to appear before

him in Chambers.

The Honourable

"

and Hastings) who had been engaged before me had left my Chambers, I immediately waited upon the Chief Justice when I saw

he was engaged upon ordinary work in Charbers, with the follow-

ing professionals before him, viz:- Messrs. Follock, K.C., and

Slade, Barristers-at-law, and Messrs. Deacon, junior, and

Beavis, Solicitors, and Mr. Arathcon Seth, my Deputy and re- -presentative
